Long-time homeowners, long-time bathrooms
A bathroom that has served a family for decades has usually been updated a little at a time: a new vanity here, a new toilet there, but often the original tub still in place. Replacing just the tub with a walk-in tub or converting it to a low-threshold shower is a targeted change. It leaves the rest of the room alone and, in most cases, is finished in a day.
What we check in a Wheat Ridge bathroom of that vintage:
- The condition of the subfloor and framing around the old tub
- Whether the drain can be reached from a basement or crawlspace below
- How far it is to the electrical panel, if the new tub has jets or a heater
- The width of the bathroom door and any narrow hallway
- Whether the window on the tub wall is low enough to interfere with a taller tub
Wheat Ridge Active Adult Center
The city's Active Adult Center at 6363 W. 35th Ave., formerly known as the Senior/Community Center, hosts classes, fitness and dance programs, and day trips for adults 50 and up. Registration is online, by phone at 303-205-7500, or in person. The center also has a citizen advisory committee that advises the Parks and Recreation Department on senior programs.
In 2026 the city held an open house at the center for its ADA Transition Plan, gathering public feedback on accessibility of city facilities. Accessibility is clearly on the city's mind, too.
A low-disruption plan
- Decide tub or shower. If the bather loves a soak and can sit and stand from a chair, a walk-in tub. If not, a low-threshold shower with a bench. Our comparison helps.
- Keep the footprint. Using the existing alcove and drain location keeps the job simpler.
- Add grab bars while the wall is open. It is the easiest time to anchor them properly.
- Add an anti-scald valve. If the existing valve is old, replacing it during the project is sensible.
- Plan for the day. If this is your only full bathroom, plan where to shower that evening.

Wheat Ridge permits
Wheat Ridge has its own building rules, distinct from Denver's. Your installer handles permits where required.
Basement bathrooms
Some Wheat Ridge homes have a basement bathroom added years after the house was built, often with a small shower stall. Because basement bathrooms sit below the main drain lines, their plumbing can work differently from the main floor. For accessible bathing, the main-floor bathroom is usually the one to change, since it avoids stairs. If a basement bath is the only option, plan carefully for safe stairs, lighting and handrails as well as the shower itself.
What one day looks like in an older home
In most homes the install follows the same rhythm: protect floors and the route, remove the old tub, open up and check the subfloor and plumbing, set the new tub or shower base, connect water and any electrical, close up the walls, then test fill and drain. In older homes the inspection after the old tub comes out matters most. If something needs repair, you should be shown the problem and agree the fix before work continues. Our installation guide has the full sequence.
Whichever room you choose, ask your installer to show you the condition of the floor under the old tub before the new one goes in. It takes a minute and gives you peace of mind about what is under your new bathroom, especially in a house that has had several owners and several rounds of updates.
Aging Safely Baths & More is based in Denver, a short drive from Wheat Ridge, and has installed walk-in tubs and accessible showers since 2012.
Wheat Ridge questions
Can you replace just the tub and leave the rest of the bathroom?
Yes, that is the most common project. We replace the tub and the wall surround around it and leave the rest of the room as is.
Is the Active Adult Center the same as the old senior center?
Yes. The city's guide describes it as formerly the Senior/Community Center.
My window is right above the tub. Is that a problem?
Walk-in tubs are taller than standard tubs, so a low window sill can interfere. Measure from the floor to the sill and tell us; there are usually workable options.
Is there a fall prevention or balance class near Wheat Ridge?
Check the Active Adult Center’s class listings and nearby recreation districts. DRCOG at 303-480-6700 can also point you to evidence-based balance programs in Jefferson County.
