Aurora sits in three counties, and that matters
Most of Aurora is in Arapahoe County, but parts of the city are in Adams County and a slice in the south is in Douglas County. For a bathroom project that sounds like trivia, yet it decides which county human services office handles benefits like Long-Term Care Medicaid or Old Age Pension, and which county programs you can call for help such as homemaker or chore services.
The good news: all three counties are served by the same Area Agency on Aging, DRCOG. So if you are not sure where to start, one call to DRCOG's Aging and Disability Resource Center at 303-480-6700 covers every Aurora address. Your property tax notice shows which county you are in.
For Aurora's veterans
Aurora is home to the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center and to Buckley Space Force Base, so we talk with a lot of veterans and veteran families here. If that is you, there is one step to take before you sign anything for a bathroom: ask your VA care team about the Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) benefit.
- Eligible veterans may qualify for HISA help with medically necessary changes to their primary home, including bathroom access changes.
- VA materials list a lifetime benefit of up to $6,800 for service-connected conditions, or for non-service-connected conditions when the veteran is rated 50% or more service-connected, and up to $2,000 for other eligible veterans.
- The application uses VA Form 10-0103 and goes through the medical center's Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service. A provider has to prescribe the change.
- Approval comes before work. Starting first can mean the work is not covered.
We can supply the written quote and product specification sheet that a HISA application asks for. DRCOG also runs a Veteran Directed Care program for eligible veterans who need help at home. Details and links are in our paying-for-it guide.
What we see in Aurora bathrooms
Because Aurora grew in waves over many decades, there is no typical Aurora bathroom. A few patterns come up often:
Original north Aurora homes
Smaller bathrooms, narrower doors and sometimes original tubs. The delivery route and the bathroom door width are the first things we check.
Ranches and split-levels
Usually a standard alcove tub, which is a straightforward spot for a walk-in tub. Split-levels mean carrying the tub up or down a short flight.
Newer two-story homes
Primary baths upstairs, often with a separate shower and a drop-in soaking tub. Some families convert the main-floor bath instead so stairs are not part of every bath.
None of these rule anything out. They just shape which model, door direction and installation plan make sense. The fit check shows what to measure.

Tub, shower or roll-in: an Aurora example
Here is a hypothetical but typical situation. A couple in a two-story home in southeast Aurora: one partner has had a knee replaced and finds the upstairs tub hard to climb into; the other still showers upstairs without trouble. The main floor has a three-quarter bath with a small shower stall.
Options we would talk through: replacing the upstairs tub with a walk-in tub so the soak is still possible; converting the main-floor stall to a low-threshold walk-in shower with a seat so stairs are optional; or both, in stages. The right answer depends on how the knee recovery goes, whether a soak matters, and how long the couple plans to stay. Our comparison guide lays out the trade-offs.
Permits in Aurora
Aurora is its own city with its own building department, so Denver's permit rules do not apply. Whether a permit is required depends on the scope of the work, such as moving plumbing or adding a new electrical circuit for a jetted tub. Your installer handles permits where required.
How an Aurora project runs
- Call or send the form. Tell us your neighborhood, who will bathe, and what is there now.
- Measurements and photos. The alcove, the bathroom door, and the route from your door.
- Written quote. Itemized, so it can be compared with other bids or used for a VA or program application.
- Install day. Most walk-in tubs and roll-in showers are installed in one day.
Aging Safely Baths & More has installed walk-in tubs and accessible showers since 2012 and is based in Denver, a short drive from most of Aurora.
Aurora questions
I live in the Douglas County part of Aurora. Which agency do I call?
For aging services, DRCOG's Area Agency on Aging covers Douglas County too, at 303-480-6700. For county benefits, Douglas County's own human services office handles your address.
Can you work with my HISA paperwork?
Yes. We can provide an itemized quote and the product specifications. The VA decides eligibility and approval, so start with your VA Prosthetics office.
How far east do you install?
We install throughout Aurora, including its eastern and southeastern neighborhoods. Call with your address if you are unsure.
