Small bathroom, real options
An older Englewood bathroom might be five feet by seven or eight, with a tub across one end, a toilet beside it and a pedestal sink by the door. Tight, but workable. Here is how each option fits a compact room:
Walk-in tub with an inward door
The door swings into the tub, so it needs no clear floor in front. Often the best tub choice when the toilet sits close to the tub.
Compact walk-in tub
Shorter models exist for tight alcoves, with less legroom. Worth considering if your alcove is under standard length.
Low-threshold walk-in shower
Uses the full tub footprint as a shower with a bench. Often the roomiest-feeling result in a small bath.
An outward-opening tub door is great for walker users, but in a narrow bathroom it may hit the toilet or vanity. Measure the clear floor in front of the tub before choosing.
The doorway is usually the deciding measurement
In older homes, the bathroom door is often the narrowest point on the delivery route, and walk-in tubs must pass through it in one piece. Before anything else, measure the open width of the bathroom door frame. If it is tight, a few things can help:
- Removing the door from its hinges for the day.
- Removing the door stop molding to gain a little width.
- Choosing a narrower model.
- Widening the doorway as part of the project, which also helps anyone who uses a walker.
Doorway widening is one of the modifications the IRS cites as an example of a disability-related improvement in Publication 502, and Brothers Redevelopment lists it among its home modification services. More on both in our paying-for-it guide.
Older plumbing
When an original tub comes out of an older house, we sometimes find older drain and supply pipes, patched framing or a subfloor that has seen leaks. That is not a reason to avoid the project, but it is a reason to choose an installer who explains the possibilities up front and agrees on how any repair is handled before work starts. Our installation guide explains what a normal install day looks like.
Malley Recreation Center
Englewood's Malley Recreation Center is built around adults 55 and older. Those over 55 get priority registration for classes and activities, and the center offers fitness, education, excursions, travel and a lunch program through Volunteers of America. The city's Malley pages list a free pass tier for adults 83 and up. Malley also hosts events such as a Healthy Aging Expo and an Older Adult Safety Symposium, which bring together dozens of agencies in one room.
Englewood's age-friendly planning
The City of Englewood has been developing an Age-Friendly Action Plan for residents 55 and older, gathering input through community conversations, and describes Malley as a central hub for older adult programs and support services. If you have opinions on what would help older residents stay in their homes, that process is a way to share them.

Permits
Englewood is its own city, separate from Denver, with its own building rules. Your installer handles permits where required.
What you gain converting a small tub to a shower
In a compact bathroom, a low-threshold shower that uses the old tub's footprint often feels larger than the tub ever did. It also changes how the room works:
- No wall to step over, and no door to swing.
- Room for a fold-down bench at the back and a handheld shower on a slide bar.
- Space for a caregiver to help from the open side.
- A shower curtain or a short fixed glass panel keeps water in without a full enclosure.
The trade-off is the soak. If a warm bath is the point, an inward-door walk-in tub is the compact-bathroom answer.
One more compact-room tip: think about the toilet. In many small bathrooms it sits right beside the tub entry, which is actually helpful, because a grab bar on that shared wall can serve both the toilet and the tub.
Aging Safely Baths & More is based in Denver, a few miles north of Englewood. We have installed walk-in tubs and roll-in showers since 2012, and most installs are done in one day.
Englewood questions
My bathroom door is narrow. Can a walk-in tub still get in?
Sometimes, by removing the door and stop molding or by choosing a narrower model. Measure the open frame width and send it to us. If it will not fit, a walk-in shower is built in place and avoids the problem.
Inward or outward door for a small bathroom?
Inward doors need no floor space in front of the tub, so they suit small bathrooms. Outward doors give a clearer entry but need room to swing.
Does Malley offer anything on home safety?
Malley has hosted events such as an Older Adult Safety Symposium and a Healthy Aging Expo. Check the city's Malley pages for upcoming dates.
Can a walk-in shower fit where my small tub is now?
Usually, yes. A low-threshold shower can be built in the existing tub footprint, and because it is built in place, a narrow bathroom door is not a problem.
