Planning ahead, not reacting
Changing a bathroom before you need to has real advantages. You get to choose calmly, compare quotes, and schedule around your life rather than around a hospital discharge. You can also pick a design you actually like. The goal is a bathroom that is comfortable now and quietly ready for later:
- A low or no threshold, so a future cane, walker or knee recovery is not a problem.
- Blocking in the walls for grab bars, even if you add only one or two now.
- A handheld shower on a slide bar that works sitting or standing.
- A seat, whether built into a walk-in tub or a fold-down bench in a shower.
- Slip-resistant surfaces and good lighting.
- Controls you can reach from outside the water, so you can set the temperature before stepping in.
Walk-in tub or walk-in shower for an active adult?
For active adults who are planning ahead, the decision often comes down to one question: do you take baths? If a long soak after a hike or a round of pickleball is part of your routine, a walk-in tub with a heated seat and a gentle air or water jet system gives you that, with a low step-in and a seat for the years ahead. If you are a quick-shower person, a low-threshold walk-in shower with a bench is usually simpler, uses less hot water, and appeals to more buyers if you sell. Read our full comparison and the features guide before deciding.
Townhomes, condos and HOAs
Westminster has many townhome and condo communities. If yours is one, a few things to sort out before the quote:
- Read the HOA rules for contractors. Many set work hours, parking, insurance certificates and notice requirements.
- Check who owns what. In some buildings the plumbing inside the walls, or the drain stack, is common property. Changes to it may need approval.
- Plan the route. Shared stairways, elevators and narrow entry halls decide which tub can be carried in. Measure every doorway on the route.
- Tell your neighbors. A one-day install is short, but water may be off for a while and there will be noise.
Westminster resources for older adults
The MAC (Mature Adult Center)
The city describes The MAC as Westminster's hub for an active adult lifestyle, with a weight room, an indoor walking track, studio classes and pickleball. Staying strong and keeping your balance are two of the best fall-prevention habits there are. westminsterco.gov
A-Lift Community Transit
Westminster lists the A-Lift program, which provides rides for Adams County residents 55 and older, including medical and nutrition trips. westminsterco.gov
DRCOG Area Agency on Aging
Free information, options counseling, Medicare counseling and caregiver support. 303-480-6700. drcog.org
Westminster crosses the Adams and Jefferson county line. County benefits run through whichever county your home is in; both are in DRCOG's service area.
Design that does not look clinical
An accessible bathroom can look like any good modern bathroom. Some approaches people like:
Grab bars as hardware
Bars are available in finishes that match faucets and towel hooks, and some double as towel bars while still being rated as grab bars.
Linear drains
In a curbless or low-threshold shower, a long, slim drain along one edge lets the floor slope in one direction and looks clean.
Simple wall surrounds
Large panels mean fewer grout lines to clean and a quieter look.
Permits
Westminster has its own building rules. Denver's permit pages do not govern Westminster projects. Your installer handles permits where required.
A ten-year bathroom plan
If you are planning ahead, it can help to think in stages rather than all at once:
- Now: replace the tub or shower with a low-threshold option you enjoy using, with a seat and a handheld shower. Add blocking for future grab bars.
- Later, if needed: add grab bars at the toilet and entry, a raised toilet seat, and brighter lighting.
- If mobility changes a lot: because the threshold is already low, the bathroom may already work with a walker or shower chair.
Planning ahead also gives you time to use the bathroom for a while and adjust: move a grab bar, add a second one, change the shower head height. Those small tweaks are easy when nobody is in a hurry, and they are much harder to think about clearly in the week after a fall or a hospital discharge.
Aging Safely Baths & More has installed walk-in tubs and roll-in showers since 2012, most in one day, and works throughout Westminster.
Westminster questions
Is it too early to put in a walk-in tub at 60?
Not if you like to soak and want a bathroom you will not have to redo later. If you do not take baths, a low-threshold shower may be the better plan.
Does my HOA need to approve the work?
It depends on your HOA's rules and whether shared plumbing is involved. Check your documents or ask your management company before scheduling.
Can grab bars match my faucet finish?
Usually yes. Grab bars come in many finishes. What matters is that they are rated as grab bars and anchored correctly.
Do you work in both the Adams and Jefferson County parts of Westminster?
Yes. We install throughout Westminster. County lines matter for county benefits, not for the installation.
