Walk-In Tubs in Castle Rock

Castle Rock sits higher than Denver, between the metro and Colorado Springs, with neighborhoods spread over hills and bluffs. That brings a couple of practical wrinkles to a walk-in tub project, mostly involving hot water and getting a heavy tub safely to the door in winter.

Hot water at a higher elevation

A walk-in tub uses more hot water per bath than a shower, because the whole tub fills at once. Two things determine whether your current water heater keeps up: how many gallons of hot water it can deliver before it runs cool, and how quickly it recovers. Gas appliances generally produce somewhat less heat output at higher elevations than they would at sea level, and Castle Rock is higher than Denver. The practical effect is that recovery time is worth checking rather than assuming.

  1. Read your water heater label. Tank size in gallons, fuel type, and the input rating.
  2. Find the tub's capacity on its spec sheet.
  3. Think about timing. Will someone else shower right before the bath? Is the dishwasher running?
  4. Decide on a fix if needed. Options include an inline heater in the tub that maintains water temperature, a larger tank, or a tankless unit sized for your home.

We review this with you before ordering so the first bath is warm.

Getting the tub to the door

Many Castle Rock homes sit on sloped lots, with steep driveways, front steps, or a walkout basement on the downhill side. A walk-in tub travels in one piece and is heavy and awkward to carry. Before installation day:

  • Tell us which entrance is easiest: front door, garage entry, or a walkout door.
  • Measure the steps and any landing on the way in, and note handrails that narrow the path.
  • In winter, shovel and de-ice the driveway, walk and steps the morning of the install. Storms on the Palmer Divide can bring snow when Denver has none.
  • Move vehicles so the delivery can park close to the chosen entrance.

Castle Rock homes

Castle Rock's housing ranges from older homes near downtown to large newer subdivisions. In the newer neighborhoods, primary bathrooms are frequently upstairs with a garden tub and a separate shower, and walkout basements sometimes have a second full bath. When stairs are a concern, the main floor or a walkout level with a direct entrance can be the better place for an accessible shower. Our comparison guide helps decide between a tub and a shower.

Castle Rock Senior Activity Center

The Castle Rock Senior Activity Center is a nonprofit that says it has served area seniors for more than 50 years, with programs aimed at keeping older adults active and connected. It is housed in the Castle Rock Recreation Center building. Douglas County's Seniors' Council also offers educational activities through the center. Activity and balance programs are part of the CDC's fall prevention advice, so a safer bathroom and a class at the center are a good combination.

Castle Rock is an incorporated town with its own building rules; the City and County of Denver's do not apply. Your installer handles permits where required.

Getting around during recovery

If the bathroom change is tied to a surgery or a new diagnosis, transportation to appointments in the metro can become a real concern for Castle Rock residents. Douglas County lists an “I Need a Ride” program for residents who are 60 or older, living with a disability, or under 200 percent of poverty; grant funds are limited and rides are not guaranteed. Aging Resources of Douglas County's navigation line can help find other transportation options.

What we ask Castle Rock callers

  • Which floor is the bathroom on, and which entrance is closest to it?
  • How many steps are there from the driveway to that entrance?
  • What size and type is your water heater?
  • Who will use the tub, and do they want to soak or mainly wash?
  • Is there a second bathroom someone else can use on install day?

Having those answers ready makes the first call short and the quote accurate.

If your home has a walkout level with its own bathroom, it is worth considering for an accessible shower, especially if the walkout door is at ground level and the upstairs bathroom requires climbing stairs every day.

Castle Rock questions

Will my water heater fill a walk-in tub?

Compare the tub's capacity with your heater's size and recovery. If it is close, an inline heater, a larger tank or a tankless unit may be needed. We check before you order.

My driveway is steep. Is that a problem?

Usually not, but tell us. We plan the entrance and the carry, and in winter the route must be cleared of snow and ice.

Do you schedule installs in winter?

Yes. Work happens indoors. If a storm makes the route unsafe, the install date can be moved; safety comes first.

Is Castle Rock covered by DRCOG?

Yes. Castle Rock is in Douglas County, which is part of DRCOG’s Area Agency on Aging service area. Call 303-480-6700 or the toll-free line, 1-866-959-3017.
